In the sixth episode of Park City First Timers, Makena caps off the end of the ski season with a splash at the biggest pool party in town. Dressed as Rose from Titanic – complete with a cardboard boat – Makena competes in the 21st annual Pond Skimming contest at Park City Mountain Resort.

Pond Skimming is part of the resort’s Spring Grüv – a celebration of spring’s arrival.  For 16 days, Park City Mountain Resort hosts a mountain of fun, including events and concerts at both of its villages.

As for the pond skimming, costume-clad contestants take their shot at lifelong glory by crossing a 100-foot, 33-degree pool on either skis or snowboards. Thrills, spills, and most definitely chills, ensue.

After much anticipation, it’s Makena’s turn.  She straps on her board, makes her way down the hill, steers clear of the icebergs, and aims for the jump (as to make a more exciting entrance into the pond).  As she launches into the pool, her giant boat implodes – garnering hoots and hollers from the crowd.  Makena’s creativity is rewarded as she tops the podium as 2017’s best costume winner.
